Diwali, one of Hinduism’s most important festivals, falls on November 4 this year, amid a five-day celebration of the triumph of light over darkness that comes just in time for the end of the ‘summer time.

Diwali, which is also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs and Newar Buddhists, symbolizes the victory of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Such a victory is worth celebrating with a feast, and families usually have traditional Diwali menus that they pass on.
